Agriculture plays a dual role in climate change, both as a contributor and as a potential solution. It is responsible for about 19-29% of global greenhouse gas emissions, driven by practices like deforestation of cropland which releases carbon into the atmosphere, methane emissions from concentrated livestock operations, and the overuse of carbon-intensive synthetic fertilizers. Livestock alone contributes nearly 14.5% of all human-induced emissions—surpassing the entire global transportation sector! However, sustainable farming techniques, such as agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and improved manure management, offer powerful opportunities to reduce emissions and even sequester carbon, making agriculture a key area for climate action.
