Batteries are electrochemical devices that store energy and release electricity upon discharge. These devices are important tools in the clean energy transition, especially in the context of electrifying highly-emitting sectors like transportation. Moreover, large scale battery energy storage is necessary to complement the generation of energy from intermittent and renewable sources (e.g. wind and solar). The current state-of-the-art rechargeable battery, the lithium (Li) ion battery, was first demonstrated in 1976. Current research in the battery space focuses on new materials for the cathode, anode, and electrolyte to enable higher energy density devices.
