Conservation plays a role in mitigating climate change and its impacts by protecting ecosystems that naturally sequester carbon, or have a large carbon stock. Conservation efforts also protect biodiversity, which is important for the health of ecosystems that provide “ecosystem services” such as pollination and water purification. Finally, some ecosystems play a role in regulating local climates, for example by influencing water cycles and rainfall patterns through evaporation, which can affect both regional and global climate systems.
