Public and private investment in nuclear energy technologies has greatly expanded in the last ten years with excitement around emerging technologies like small modular reactors, molten salt reactors, and fusion reactors fueling investment. Nuclear power produces minimal carbon emissions and can meet significant energy demand–there are currently 94 fission plants in the US producing 97GW of commercial electricity. However public concerns regarding nuclear energy and waste, government regulation of fission power plants, and abundant and cheap coal and natural gas, have stymied the development of nuclear power in the United States and only two fission plants have come online in the last 25 years. Traditional nuclear power plants are also up-front cost intensive, which has increased interest in nuclear technologies that are smaller and modular.
